Avoiding Christmas Computer Disasters
Before closing for the Christmas break, it is useful to take a few precautionary steps to ensure your systems and equipment are safe over the break.
Thunderstorms and other weather events, power surges, fire and even theft are all possibilities while the office is closed.
A number of steps can be taken that will minimise the risk of many of these events. These include:
- Unplug all computer, modem, printer and telephone items from power and communication lines. This prevents the event of a power surge or nearby lightning strike from badly damaging equipment, often beyond repair.
- Move valuable equipment into difficult to access places, such as under desks and in cupboards. This makes it harder for a potential thief to locate the items quickly and therefore minimises any losses that could occur.
- Make a complete backup of your data and store this securely off-site. Should an event occur which causes an irretrievable loss of data, ensuring you have a copy puts your mind at ease and allows fast recovery with minimal downtime.
- Update your systems on return. Run any Windows Updates and Anti-Virus updates to ensure you're protected.
Doing these tasks will ensure you minimise any potential disasters during the Christmas break. Enjoy your holidays!
